"Gry [w] Pana Cogito / Play(ing) Mr Cogito Games"
performance based on Zbigniew Herbert’s texts

Director: Tomasz Rodowicz
Music: Tomasz Krzyżanowski, Maciej Maciaszek
Choreography: CHOREA
Light: Tomasz Krukowski
Visualisations: Jaromir Dziewic, Piotr Wdówka, Joanna Chmielecka
Literary support: Joanna Chmielecka
Cast: Julia Jakubowska, Dominika Krzyżanowska, Małgorzata Lipczyńska, Joanna Chmielecka, Adam Biedrzycki, Hubert Domański, Sebastian Klim, Tomasz Krzyżanowski, Maciej Maciaszek
Premiere location: Teatr CHOREA, Łódź
Premiere date: 8.11.2008

„One learns the game by watching how others play. But how does the observer distinguish in this case between players' mistakes and correct play? (...) Look at what we call games. What do they have in common? (...) What still counts as a game and what no longer does? Can you give the boundary? No. You can draw one; for none has so far been drawn. (...) (Ludwig Wittgenstein Philosophical Investigations)

Playing Mr Cogito is an attempt to transfer the poet’s thoughts to the stage. Precise poetical constructions become disassembled into parts, which results in unveiling their elementary living meanings and exposing the authentic power of words. Fragments of Zbigniew Herbert’s texts are put into new relations.
Three basic theatrical means, words, movements and music, build a stage reality guided by its own rules. They create an inseparable entity – a new chorea. Movements do not illustrate the words, music does not tell the story on its own. It is only a combination of the three that gives birth to a multi-layered world of rather surprising meanings and tangible tension. The surrealism permeating these stage images affects the senses, the subconscious and cogito in the same strong way.
The struggle with Mr C’s ideals takes place in sixteen games. Each of them has its own rules set in accordance with the rules of the unique method of CHOREA. Games played with the poet’s thoughts constitute an attempt to find out what Herbert can tell us in today’s reality. They make it possible for the poet himself to ask us where we are. But who is he talking to? Who is listening to him today?

"TAKE OVER" - ruszyły warsztaty

Start of "TAKE OVER" project

10-28.04.2015
CHOREA Theatre

The project Take Over: “Seeing young audiences through young people’s eyes” gathers British Council (UK), Bios (Greece), Chorea Theatre (Poland), Zaduzbina Ilije M. Kolarca (Serbia – “Kolarac”), and Teatro Limonaia (Italy), all organisations active in performing arts, driven by a strong desire to connect or re-connect with young adults (age 18-25) in an effort to engage with a wider and more diverse audience. During the project, the partners will re-imagine artistic programmes from the point of view of younger generations, making a lasting impact on staff and how they involve, engage with and attract young audiences as well as an eye-opening and learning experience for the young participants.

The project proposes an innovative demand-led audience development model, establishing a Youth Board in four arts organisations in order to include young people’s voices and opinions in artistic programmes and visions. Throughout the creation of the Youth Board and the Take Over events in Greece, Poland, Serbia and Italy, partners’ staff will receive training and learn from other European experiences, notably from the UK and Finland. This will help them to better understand how to engage with young people through these innovative techniques. In parallel, the young people participating in the Youth Board will embark into a long term learning experience that will give them a unique insight of the European cultural market and equip them with new skills. In four participating countries, the Youth Board will be in charge of curating and producing “Take Over events”, as a carte blanche for them to create an offer that reflects their generation’s cultural aspirations.

The work plan includes twenty activities: a study visit, participatory workshops, a baseline and impact survey, a European seminar, series of Youth Board sessions, a mentoring scheme, four bespoke Take Over events, an external evaluation, one final conference, one online platform complemented by local communication strategies.

The results will be the promotion of a more inclusive and upstream approach of Young Audience Development in the European performing arts sector, a blueprint for Arts professionals to re-think their programmes and services from the perspective of their audience, a new generation of cultural players equipped with new skills and a unique insight of the European cultural market.

First workshop sessions:

10.04.2015, h. 15.00 - 20.00
14.04.2015, h. 17.00 - 20.00
21.04.2015, h. 17.00 - 20.00

Premiere: 09-14. 12. 200,5 Współczesny Theatre (Wrocław), Nowy Praga Theatre (Warsaw)
Performance duration: 60 minutes

Po Ptakach / After the Birds is the second part of the triptych created by CHOREA and Earthfall. It is a result of another international theatrical project which originated in Cardiff (Wales) in December 2005. Using two absolutely different aesthetics and working methods, the two groups jointly created a brand new language on the border of genres and styles. CHOREA and Earthfall confront ancient Greek choral songs with modern music, urban space choreography and fears of the modern world.

We have attempted to answer the question: what is left after Aristophanes’ The Birds, ancient Greeks and their culture, and what do we have in common with them? We must remember that Athens in Aristophanes’ times went through devastating wars with Sparta, collapsing democracy, political crises, plots and power struggles among different political factions. Social and religious values started to crumble. In such circumstances, there always appear some guides to a brave new world which may be created on the ruins of the old one thanks to utopian ideas, populist slogans, manipulations and operating exactly between the ones who succeeded and the ones who lost. Both these groups cannot exist without one another, so, in the areas where their paths cross, the power belonging to the first group and the dreams belonging to the second one must be taken away. Everything must be surrounded by a wall, guards must be employed and strangers must be driven away, as it happened in Cloud Cuckoo Land – the Aristophanes’ ideal new state. But from behind the tall walls, gods look like corrupted idiots, and people look like dwarfs deprived of dreams. Can a paradise on Earth be built only behind barbed-wire fences; do all world healing visions become equally bitter and dangerous when we start putting them into practice? During the play performed in a post-communist state, in the global terrorism era, we pose these questions not only to Aristophanes...

Premiere: 23.10.2013, Fabryka Sztuki w Łodzi

The performance "WSZĘDODOMNI / PANHABITANTS" is a result of a project created in 2013, by CHOREA artists and independent artists from Lodz with the residents of a center for homeless people in Lodz.
Artists and animators from CHOREA tried to get inside this difficult social area, and to identify life circumstances of this special community, they also tried to activate and motivate participants of the project. Meetings, discussions and regular theater workshops helped many people to externalize their own judgments, emotions and artistic skills in various art fields.
In terms of this project we organized a musical concert, work-in-progress shows of our joint work, we made a film about our actions and created a democratic performance, a unique theatrical experiment.
