'Spojrzystość' is a concert inspired by texts of famous Polish poet - Boleslaw Lesmian. The concert is created with polyphonic compositions, based on complex rhythmic structures. Rhythm and musicality are the most important categories in Lesmian's texts - they both create an inseparable and harmonious whole with the poetic word. They create incredibly sensual images and reveal very sensitive soul of their creator.
Beautifully performed vocal and choral parts are joined with elements of body percussion. The choral voices are supported by the hypnotic sounds of viola (Paweł Odorowicz), and ambient sounds of guitar (Maciej Staniecki). Together they create an oneiric and mystic world, filled with the most honest and pure human emotions and desires.

Concert 'Spojrzystość' - poetry of Boleslaw Lesmian for 25 voices

Music: Tomasz Krzyżanowski i Paweł Odorowicz (songs: "Z falą niebo" i "Słoneczna opowieść")

The Theatre Academy of Warsaw and the Łódź-based CHOREA Theatre jointly run a theatre project entitled “Hamlets Case Study”, aimed at shaping the contemporary approach to Shakespeare through Wyspiański’s and Grotowski’s texts.

2nd and 3rd year students of the Theatre Academy’s acting department come together with actors of CHOREA Theatre, under direction of Waldemar Raźniak and Tomasz Rodowicz in an attempt at tackling’s Shakespeare’s Hamlet. They approach it using a variety of texts: an archival collection of writings by Jerzy Grotowski from 1964, entitled „Hamlet Case Study”, reviews and records of actors from the Theatre of 13 Rows, and Stanisław Wyspiański’s „Hamlet Case Study”.

'We wanted to put ourselves in the same place that Grotowski’s group of actors found themselves in over 40 years ago. In the place of an unknown, at a crossroads and facing the imminence of a catastrophe as we are to tackle a great text' (T. Rodowicz)

Preview showings of Raźniak and Rodowicz’s performance were preceeded by a series of rehearsals and physical training evocative of Grotowski’s method, as well as work on Shakespeare’s text and team work on building the dramaturgy of the performance. Actors searched for those fragments in Shakespeare’s play that they found closest to their own experience. The performance goes beyond the narrative of Shakespeare’s drama as it is enriched with the actors’ personal statements about their life choices and their own identity.

The performance is an attempt at answering the question of who is Hamlet in today’s world? What made Grotowski follow Wyspiański in his choice of situating Hamlet in a Polish village, in a cemetery? And, most importantly: can one read Shakespeare today with Grotowski?

'The project alludes to the theatre avant-garde of the 60s, of which Jerzy Grotowski’s Laboratorium theatre was a representatntive. This coincides with the year 2017 being proclaimed the official centenary anniversary of the Polish avant-garde. Yet, we don’t create any reconstrutions of Grotowski’s work. Inspired by the courage and the catastrophe of that attempt from 50 years ago, we search for our own narrative and our own risks. An overcoming of the typical means of theatre production is clear in our approach to all of the texts – Shakespeare, Wyspiański and Grotowski. No one has made such an attempt to date.' (T.Rodowicz)

Preview showings will take place on April 1st and 2nd 2017 as part of the action which is part of the „Dotknij Teatru” [Touch The Theatre] initiative within the International Theatre Day celebrations in Łódź.

Spektakl "Szczelina" na Dniach Sztuki Współczesnej

"The Crack" on Dni Sztuki Współczesnej Festival

26.05.2018
Theatre Academy in Białystok

Performance "Szczelina / The Crack" by CHOREA Theatre, in terms of "Dni Sztuki Współczesnej" in Białymstok.

date: 26.05.2018 (Saturday)
time: 15:00
place: Akademia Teatralna in Białymstok, Teatr Szkolny im. J. Wilkowskiego, 14 Sienkiewicza Street

more information: http://bok.bialystok.pl/wydarzenia/wydarzenie/teatr-chorea-szczelina/

"The Crack" is a performance created by the CHOREA Theatre, based on the text of the Norwegian playwright Arne Lygre, translated by Elizabeth Frątczak-Nowotny, and using fragments of poetic texts written by Rumi.

This is not a performance about refugees, who have suddenly lost the roofs over their heads and have to head out into the unknown. This is not a performance about those who do not know where they are going, but only where they came from. This is not a performance about people who have lost their loved ones, yet they still want to live. This is not a performance about those who are losing everything, yet still have hope that they will be able to start their lives anew.

"The Crack" is a performance about you - about us, who have roofs over our heads and plenty of food to eat, yet we still do not realize that we can lose it all, at any moment. That suddenly we can be thrown into the unknown, just because someone, without warning, might drop a bomb on our town, or poison our water, or decide that we do not have any rights to live in our city anymore. This performance is about our fears and about finding hope. And about the fact, that each one of us is, was, or one day will be a refugee, usually not by his own choice.

We read newspapers and watch the news every day. At times we feel like escaping to Noah's ark, or at least to Nepal. But thanks to the work on this performance we feel less helpless in relation to the world which surrounds us (this may sound terribly naive, but it is how I feel). Maybe because the struggle with our own helplessness begins with talking about it, and not turning our eyes away from what is happening. We are looking for a crack, through which a stream of light could shine through, and for a chance to reach the other side of despair.

Six women and one man try to tell, through words, movement and singing, very ordinary stories of people who have lost everything, and have nothing left but hope. Hope, which sometimes turns into a survival instinct, and sometimes into an acceptance of its loss.

I hope that, thanks to our performance, despite the aggression and fear against OTHERS which is growing day by day, we will be able to see people in these others. People like us. When the demons are gone, maybe then the conversation will begin...

Cconcert "Fortell Livet" is inspired by sounds, words and images from Poland, Iran and Norway, created by the Norwegian actress Juni Dahr, Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat and Polish CHOREA Theatre, led by Tomasz Rodowicz. The light from Polish, Persian and Norwegian music creates a performance inspired by the poetic works of Wisława Szymborska and Zbigniew Herbert.

On the occasion of her 30th anniversary of stage work, Juni Dahr created a story about human life, starting with her theatrical roots, the famous school of Jerzy Grotowski in Wrocław, creating a new musical performance, presented for the first time at the Sandvika Theater in Norway, with the participation of world-famous jazz musicians: Arve Henriksen (trumpet), Tord Gustavsen (piano) and Kenneth Ekornes (drums). The concert is produced by Erik Hillestad.

The partner of the project is Baerum Kulturhus.

Performance 'Darkness. What isHidden' is a result of cooperation between artists from CHOREA Theatre and blind and visually-impaired young people.

Darkness? We usually are afraid of her. For those who are scared of the darkness, she is a primal lack of something that gives us a sense of security and certainty. She is identified with evil, fear, unknown and danger. But still sometimes we feel a mysterious need to nestle into the darkness, a need to stop the movement of the matter, a hope to achieve peace and calm. Darkness is surprising, attractive, full of whispers and rustlings that are sometimes worth hearing... What is your darkness like? Are you afraid of her? Or maybe on the contrary, you strongly need her? Such darkness in which you could stop for a moment, break away from the momentum of everyday life and - despite appearances - see more...
